Thomas The Train Cake 1

Thomas The Train Cake 1

This character cake was for my sons second birthday.

The Thomas the Train cake was made with a basic boxed Betty Crocker chocolate cake for the base (in a 9x6 pan) and a boxed vanilla cake in a 6in round for the head.

Both cakes were torted, and filled with chocolate ganache. They were both then "dirty iced" with a white butter cream icing.

The base of this kids birthday cake was covered in blue fondant, with black and red fondant strips, and black butter cream for accents and lettering.

The head of this Thomas the train cake was covered in grey fondant, with two circular white pieces for the eyes. Then I piped black butter cream for his eyes and features.

Looking back, I would have filled in the eyes differently, but my son loved his birthday cake and that makes Daddy happy!

Fabulously simplistic
by: Carmen

Thanks so much for posting this! I'm planning on making a Thomas the Train cake for my son's 2nd birthday in July, and most of the kids birthday cakes I've seen have been extremely complicated. This Thomas cake seems so basic and I'm sure a 2-year-old would absolutely love it. I'm planning on using marzipan instead of fondant, since I don't care much for fondant, but I think the principle is the same. Thanks again!
